Manchester United’s U23s played arch rivals Liverpool looking to bounce back from horrible losses to Chelsea and Leicester. The game was an incredible nine goal thriller, yes you read that right nine goals. The eyes of the world were upon new signing Amad Diallo, but he didn’t disappoint bagging a brace. Joe Hugill also looked absolutely masterclass, somehow bringing in four goals for United. The game ended 3-6 to the good, and the Devils snapped a two game losing streak with this emphatic win.
The scoring started quickly in this one. Amad Diallo didn’t take long to open his account in a United shirt. He quickly took the ball off a Liverpool defender and expertly finished, making it 0-1 United in the 14th minute. However, the game did not slow down in the slightest with Joe Hugill grabbing his first in the 24th minute. The goal was set up by a brilliant back heel flick from Hannibal to Puigmal, who expertly found Hugill with a well timed through ball.
However, Liverpool was not deterred after the two goals. They pulled one back in the 34th minute with Tyler Morton finding the back of the net with a volley. Then Luis Longstaff leveled the game in the 43rd minute after United made a series of defensive errors. The first half ended all square 2-2.
United did not wait long in the second half to break the tie. In the 56th minute, Diallo found Fernandez in the corner, who then expertly found Hugill in the box. Hugill then converted the pass into a brilliant off balance goal, making it 2-3 United. Hugill punished Liverpool for a third time in the 65th minute from the penalty spot after Hannibal was clearly fouled in the box.
However, the scoring did not stop there. In the 71st minute, Shoretire forced a defense error and Hugill picked up the ball. He quickly converted his FOURTH goal of the game. That’s right in the 71st minute Hugill already had four goals against Liverpool. Then immediately after that Liverpool had not learned their lesson and fouled Hannibal again in the box. This led to Diallo getting his second goal of his debut in the 74th minute. Liverpool was able to get one back in the 83rd minute, but it mattered little as the game was already out of reach. It ended 3-6 United.
This game was a classic, with there being an average of a goal every 10 minutes. It was an excellent debut for Amad Diallo getting a brace against rivals Liverpool. There really isn’t a better way to start a United career. Besides the two goals, Diallo also looked incredible dribbling throughout the game and at times Liverpool was committing the entire defense to stop him. Hannibal was excellent throughout, as he won two penalties for the Devils. I have to be honest though, the man of the match was Joe Hugill, he scored more goals by himself than Liverpool did total. That is simply legendary. The U23s will be looking to continue their winning ways against Blackburn on February 5th at 2:00PM EST.
