With the news of United missing out on top prospect Jude Bellingham, the latest development around Angel Gomes’ future brings it into context.
Given how severely cash strapped United are, it makes sense they would forgo the relatively sizeable upfront fee for Bellingham and instead give Gomes the contract he has been hankering for.
More below:
Manchester United are edging closer to securing Angel Gomes’ long-term future, with the midfielder set to sign a £25,000-per-week deal.
Gomes caught the eye during his rise through United’s academy before Ole Gunnar Solskjaer bled him into the first-team this season.
However, he has only managed six appearances in 2019-20 while fellow youngsters Daniel James, Mason Greenwood, Brandon Williams and Scott McTominay were granted more regular minutes.
At the end of the day, this is a good deal given Gomes’ age and potential upside. Still only 19 years old, the Englishman’s future looks to be at United for now; let’s see if he’s given an opportunity to shine during the restart.
