Americans to Watch in the Bundesliga Restart

Ever since the return of the Bundesliga in Germany, football fans around the globe have been glued to the action. However, many Americans have been left watching without knowing who to root for. The German football league, has proven to be a hotbed for growing young American talent, like the former Dortmund winger, Christian Pulisic. The following is a list of American players to keep your eye on and support during the Bundesliga restart.

Weston McKennie

Schalke’s midfield duo of Weston McKennie and Suat Serdar are the main reasons why S04 is still competing for a chance to play European football next season. McKennie has been with the German club since 2016 and got his first call up for USMNT the following year. All the of that pressure could cause a young player to crack, but McKennie has proved he has what it takes to handle the pressure.

McKennie has also hinted at a move away from my favorite Bundesliga side, Schalke, to the Premier League. The 21 year-old Texan has made 21 appearances this season for Schalke in the Bundesliga. With United possibly needing a strong defensive midfielder, the possibility could arise for McKennie to become the 5th American to play for our Red Devils.

Gio Reyna

Known as “Christian Pulisic 2.0,” the young Dortmund player is strikingly similar to Pulisic in his style of play. He has been hailed as future star by USMNT supporters. While he has a massive amount of hype around him, Reyna’s skill on the pitch has backed it up so far.

The 6’1 Sunderland born attacking midfielder has made eight appearances for Dortmund thus far this season, and doesn’t turn 18 years old until this November. The future is bright for this young American.

Josh Sargent

Next on our list is a striker from SV Werder Bremen. Sargent entered the German football scene in 2018 from his development club St. Louis Scott Gallagher Missouri. He earned his stripes by playing for Werder Bremen II, before getting called up to the main club.

At only 20 years old, he is a joy to watch and holds great potential. Sargent has also made 12 appearances for the USMNT scoring 5 goals.

Zack Steffen

The good news is that he is American…the bad news is that he on loan from Manchester City. Steffen is looking to become the second choice goalkeeper at the Eptyiad Stadium next fall. The Maryland native has already been selected as the number 1 keeper for the USMNT. Currently playing for Fortuna Düsseldorf, Steffen should be their first choice keeper for the entirety of the restart.

Tyler Adams

Playing for RB Leipzig, Adams has made himself a pretty solid career in the Bundesliga. Adams is extremely versatile defensively, as he plays as a CDM, wingback, or fullback. Since moving to Germany in 2019, Adams has been impactful in helping Leipzig rise to the upper echelon of the Bundesliga.
